Real Madrid win Ballon d'Oh! award for Copa del Rey blunder

The Blancos have claimed another prize - albeit an unwanted one - as Goal readers crowned their Copa del Rey howler as the biggest blunder of 2015

Real Madrid have been crowned Ballon d'Oh! winners for the biggest blooper of 2015 after failing to notice that Denis Cheryshev was suspended from the Copa del Rey.

Their ejection from the Spanish cup competition for playing the banned Cheryshev against Cadiz was one the biggest stories of December, with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique among those who ridiculed the mistake.

Madrid won 23 per cent of the overall vote, with around 12,000 Goal readers around the world voting over the 24-hour period, allowing the sacked Rafa Benitez to at least win one trophy with the Blancos!

Sepp Blatter's tumble from winning the Fifa presidency race to resigning days later amid a corruption crisis earned him second position in the Ballon d'Oh!, with 17% of readers believing his howler was the worst of 2015.

Jose Mourinho's decision to publicly criticise former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro after the draw with Swansea edged third place with 13%, just ahead of Jerome Boateng for falling on his backside against Lionel Messi in Barcelona's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal came fifth for forgetting Chris Smalling's name on two occasions, while Gonzalo Jara's rear end finger-poke on Edinson Cavani missed out on a top-five finish by just 24 votes.

Another high-profile gaffe in 2015 was Netherlands failing to qualify for Euro 2016 and just over 1,000 readers believed that was the biggest slip-up of the year.

The Ballon d'Oh! bottom three were rounded up by the Gold Cup refereeing scandal (4%), Bayern's penalty takers in their DFB-Pokal semi-final (2%), and David Beckham's blunder in claiming AC Milan could win the Champions League (2%).
