JAMB Turned Colleges Of Education Into Dumping Grounds

Anthony Anwuka, one of the ministerial nominees appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari,  on Wednesday, October 28, said that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has turned teachers training colleges of education into dumping grounds for rejected students.
This statement was made while Anwuka was answering questions from the lawmakers on the recent merging of all JAMB examination into the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) during his ministerial screening.

He said that it has greatly affected the training of teachers in the country.
According to him, about 85 to 90 per cent of students indicate interests in going to the universities while others are shared between the polytechnics and the colleges of education.
Anwuka said: “Sadly what happens is that, when they take these examinations and the results are released, JAMB first takes the blueprint of the result to the universities and allow them about one month to choose.
“Understandably, the universities take the very best, next they pass on what is left to the polytechnics to choose and they pick from whatever is left.
“Finally, that list is passed on the colleges of education where they pick the dreads; those that the universities didn’t want and the polytechnics didn’t want are what is sent to the colleges of education.
“There must be a total relook at what is going on in the UTME examination to give a breeder to teachers’ education, to afford the teacher education sector in choosing the best.”
Anwuka who might be the possible minister of education urged the federal government for the need to revamp the educational sector in Nigeria.
Stressing the need for more focus on the educational sector, he said a marshal plan based on well-articulated programmes as listed in the All Progressives Congress manifesto must be developed.
Recall that the former Vice Chancellor of the Imo state University between 2000 and 2005 had ten petitions against him from the people of Imo state challenging his nomination.
He is also the in-law to Rochas Okorocha, the governor of Imo state.
