The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPPCO) on Sunday claimed that PDP is winning in 23 states as against 14 states of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
But the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Atahiru Jega, warned that against such declarations noting that only the electoral commission can give such information.
The PDPPCO, which also said it was deeply concerned by the figures on the elections so far published on social media which portrays the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the lead, said the reports they are getting from the field is that president Goodluck Jonathan is doing very well in the south and north central and making very strong inroads into various states in the core North.
The director of the media and publicity, Femi Fani-Kayode, also debunked reports in social media that senate president, David Mark, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro who is presently the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Senator Iyiola Omisore, the leader of our party in Osun state, Governor Olusegun Mimiko, the Governor of Ondo lost their polling units and wards.
Fani-Kayode said “as we speak now, we are winning in 23 states and we have 64 percent while the APC is winning in 14 states and has 36 percent. These results are subject to confirmation by the Independent National Electoral Commission. However, we are certain of what we are saying because we have information from our agents in every polling unit nationwide. No one must test our will by attempting to change these results and the APC should desist from pushing this nation to the brink of fire, chaos and destruction with their dirty lies and propaganda.”
But the Jega, who expressed reservations over where such reports emanated from stressed that only the electoral commission has the constitution mandate to declare a winner in any election it conducts.
The INEC chairman who questioned where the PDPPCO got its information from, warned that Nigerians should be careful not to take information from people “that are partisan, rely only on information given by the commission.”
“I don’t know his sources, that question should be posed to him to explain. But we need to be careful to put out such information on people that are partisan.”
