PRESIDENTIAL candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, has lauded the national leaders of the party, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande, for creating what he described as formidable opposition party.
This is just as he expressed confidence of winning Saturday’s presidential election and becoming the next president of the country.
Buhari gave the commendation on Wednesday, at the colloquium in honour of Tinubu, saying that the duo, among others, had shown exemplary leadership concerning the success now credited to the party all over the country today.
He observed that Nigerians never thought the merger of legacy parties that transformed to APC was possible, given the political history of the country.
“But this merger, if there are two people responsible for it, they are Tinubu and Akande. They did it because their constituencies believed in them,” Buhari said.
“We have been trying since 2005 and this time, a look at the PDP government at the centre shows us that the merger would be worthwhile to save the country. Now we have the APC and the fear of the APC is the beginning of wisdom in Nigeria.
“Our success as a party can only be undermined by people that are not among us. How we have conducted ourselves according to the law, from the merger, to the convention and till date, is huge,” the APC presidential candidate said.
Buhari, who noted that there was desperation in the PDP already, expressed confidence that he would win the Saturday election and urged the electorate to reflect carefully on the situation of things today from when the ruling party took over in 1999 as they go to the polls on Saturday.
“I know that a lot of money has changed hands ahead of the Saturday elections, but if we continue to motivate ourselves and mobilise our constituencies, victory is ours,” he said.
National leader of APC, Tinubu, in his remark, said it was time for people to take decision, or it would never be taken.
“We must decide if compassion should speak more than corruption. This is the time to believe in something more profound and in a government that is coming and that government is APC. Let us all have faith.
“I’m filled with expectations of a more just society. History is upon us to make the needed change, otherwise history will make an unfavourable verdict on us,” Tinubu said.
Buhari’s running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, while introducing the pro-poor Conditional Cash Transfer programme of the APC, said the party’s campaigns across the country had shown that people’s expectations were high.
He pointed out that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government could not come up with any gimmicks to the people that had been impoverished.
