An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) serving in Katsina-Ala, Benue State, identified as Bala Ibrahim, has been shot dead by gunmen suspected to be Fulani gunmen, while several other police officers were injured in the ambush attack.
According to the state Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Austine Ezeani, the sad incident happened on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, when the patrol team the officers were driving in was sprayed in a hail of bullets by the gunmen who trailed them in a Toyota Corolla car.
The deceased officer was recently deployed from Abuja to Benue on a special assignment to investigate the prevalent case of cattle rustling and the unending war between Fulani cattle rearers and some communities in the state, when he met his untimely death.
The PPRO explained further:
"The assassinated police officer was in a patrol vehicle at Katsina-Ala town, alongside three policemen, where they went to carry out the assignment when some gunmen who came in a Toyota corolla vehicle opened fire on them.
The patrol vehicle lost control and the deceased ASP died on the spot while the other three police personnel were badly injured."
