The European Union election observation mission to Nigeria has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for addressing the problems of the card readers which marred the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections.
INEC-Card Reader in use
It would be recalled that two weeks ago, the EU observers complained that the card readers posed challenges in the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections.
The Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission to Nigeria, Santiago Fisas, has now commended the INEC for addressing the problems posed by the card readers in the previous election.
According to Punch, Fisas said reports he received across Lagos showed that the accreditation exercise was smooth.
He said: “So far we have not received news of any problems. Not many people have come out to vote here in Victoria Island but the machines are working better than they did during the presidential election.
“The day is still very long and we will keep following the process including the collation which is a very important process. I urge the police and INEC to be neutral.“
Fisas, who is also a member of the European Parliament noted that the governorship election was just as important as the presidential election because governors made more direct impact on the lives of people than presidents worldwide.
The use of the card reader machine by INEC had generated heated debates before and during the presidential election. Some politicians had reservations about the use of the machines fearing that it could disenfranchise eligible voters.
