Nigerians have been engrossed in the revelations from the alleged diversion of $2.1bn meant for the purchase of weapons by the office of the NSA.
The NSA gave part of the money, a total of N120m to some Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria, NPAN, members as compensation for the losses they incurred in June 2014 when armed soldiers seized newspapers and newspaper distribution vans.
Tinubu alongside other media figures admitted that the former NSA, gave their organization a sum of N9m each, through the publisher of ThisDay newspapers and NPAN President, Nduka Obaigbena, as compensation for the disruption of their operations and attack on their personnel by soldiers.
As “a moral burden,” the Uzo Orji Kalu owned Sun Newspaper recently returned its own share of N9m compensation it received from the NSA through NPAN.
The newspaper, in a statement signed by the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Eric Osagie, the paper said it took the decision to return the money following the controversy the episode generated.
“In the light of the foregoing, we have returned the cheque of N9m to NPAN for onward transmission to the source through which it came,’’ a statement reads.
Tinubu and the NPAN are not unconnected to the entire saga at all.
“Tinubu and the newspaper proprietors collected drafts. No one asked for the cheques from the federal government.
“No one asked, why drafts and not NPAN cheques? No one asked for any official memo from the federal government on the agreement. No due process,” a political commentator lamented recently.
Angered by the money-sharing revelation, one of the NPAN members, Punch newspapers, suspended its membership of the organization.
“After a careful review of recent, and still unfolding, developments, Punch Nigeria Limited is suspending its membership of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria until further notice. This suspension takes effect immediately,’’ the PUNCH stated.
A cross section of political commentators are of the view that the NATION which has been the official megaphone of the ruling APC mantra of change should do the needful to return its share of the looted fund as in tandem with its motto: “Truth in defence of freedom.”
