The spiritual leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Shiite, Ibrahim Elzakzaky, has said the group knows those behind a suicide attack on its members last week.
At least 20 members of the group died when a suicide bomber attacked the group during its procession from Kano to Zaria on Friday.
The attacker, who pretended to be a member of the sect, set off a bomb at Dakasonye village in Garun Mallam Local Government of Kano State.
A would-be bomber, who was arrested before he could strike, said they were sent by Boko Haram, a statement by the Shiite sect said.
Boko Haram also released a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.
But Mr. Elzakzaky said on Tuesday, at the end of Nahjul Balagha study session held at Hussainiyyah Baqiyyatullah, Zaria, that he disagreed with those claims.
In a statement signed by the sect spokesperson, Ibrahim Usman, Mr. Elzakzaky said it wasn’t Boko Haram that bombed the Shiite trekkers.
“We know the names of the contractors and those contracted to commit the massacre, their identity is not hidden from us. Therefore we cannot be cowed by an imaginary Boko Haram tale, let them tell it to the fools and the ignorant. They should know that they are dealing with those with foresight, wisdom and intelligence, and above all with the real religion,” he said.
“There is nothing like a suicide bomber. They torture and drug unsuspecting captives and made them carriers of the explosives which they detonated amidst people.
“Now they are targeting the mass entry into Zaria at the peak of the Arba’been trek,” he said.
Mr. El-Zakzaky, however, did not mention who the sect suspects for the bombing.
“The perpetrators of Kano bomb attack were the same people that seven years ago in broad daylight attacked us and killed 2 people, attacked Ashura procession and killed people in Potiskum and killed 34 people during Quds Day procession in Zaria in 2014.
“In most cases, these killers carry out the offensive under the watchful eyes of security operatives, sometimes escorted by tinted glass vehicles,” Mr. Zakzaky said.
At the end, he prayed Allah to punish those who carried out the killings.
“May they not reap the proceeds of the contract. In Allah we depend and He will protect us,” Mr. Zakzaky said.
