My title as DJ disgusts some people -DJ Nana on Bitter-sweet tales of DJs before fame

My title as DJ disgusts some people -DJ Nana
dj-nana2In an industry once dominated by men, women are beginning to blossom and prove that they can stand shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. One of such women is DJ Nana. People started paying attention to DJ Nana when she came out tops to win the first ever Airtel and Barcaddi Cool FM DJ Competition.

Under the tutelage of DJ Jimmy Jatt ,she honed her skills and was nominated in the maiden edition of African Global DJs’ Award, for the best female DJ category in 2013.
Nana gets mixed reactions, when she is being introduced as a female DJ. “I have gotten different impressions from people. Some get excited seeing me handle their parties while some are disgusted when my name is mentioned. To them, a lady DJ would not give them what they wanted.
Some would look down on me because they have this notion that a female DJ cannot be good. But I tell you, we have a whole lot of successful female DJs today doing the womenfolks proud. Above all, a lot of people do appreciate me and say that it is inspiring to see a female DJ performing so well.” She recently collaborated on a song with Omawunmi, titled Know.

“Everything about my life is serious. Of course it’s serious.” This is the response of superstar rapper Ice Prince to a question about his relationship with Ghanaian-French beauty Maima.
The Choc Boi Nation artiste who is known for keeping his private life out of the public eye, makes this revelation during a no-holds barred chat session on the premiere episode of the new MTV Base show ‘Real Talk’.
The show, hosted by MTV Base VJ Ehiz and VJ Stephanie is a one-on-one question and answer platform, which enables fans to connect with top celebrities by getting answers to questions they have asked on social media. No questions are off-limits – secrets, guilty pleasures, old memories, phobias, everything is on the table.
In the course of the premiere episode,  Ice Prince answers questions on a range of subjects including  his opinion about Ghanaian rapper  Sarkodie,  what age he stopped wetting the bed (15 or 16, he reveals shockingly!), if he has ever worn fake jewelry, and whether he has a thing for  “Yvonne’s”.
Responding to a question about if he has ever had a fight with a fellow celebrity, he replies “I don’t get into fights, but maybe some altercations once in a while. Maybe somebody moved your verse on a song or someone didn’t release a song when they were supposed to, but we know how to find our way around it. There are so many years ahead for us to make music anyway.”

Nigerian female Disc Jockey, Florence Otedola, known as DJ Cuppy is making efforts to become a household name as a DJ. The beautiful daughter of oil magnate, Femi Otedola was recently featured in Forbes Woman Africa magazine and currently an intern at Jay Z’s Roc Nation.
She has been referred to as “Daddy’s little girl”,who is feeding off dad’s wealth. But Cuppy doesn’t love to be seen in that light.
“I am following my dreams and doing an exciting project and yet it’s overshadowed by my background or influence. It’s quite difficult, talent and passion speak for themselves.”
She further explains that people sometimes doubt her ability as a DJ, having the impression that she cannot deliver. “People sometimes doubt I could actually do the job.
It’s a bit disappointing, I am a honest person, people should identify more with what I do and how passionate I am about it. We all have our platforms, it now depends on how you are making use of that platform. You can get opportunity based on different platforms that can only take as far as you go. After a while, if you are not good at what you do, then you won’t have anything to do afterward.”

“The biggest issue I faced while coming up in the industry is rejection. Rejection in all aspect. Even from friends.” These are the words of Sodamola Oluseye Desmond popularly known as DJ Spinall.
Before ever becoming the official DJ for Industry Nite, Channel O Africa, touring major five cities in the United States of America and featuring Burna Boy and M.I, the cap-wearing Disc Jockey found it difficult to gain acceptance in the industry.
“I had a lot of problem with my dad when I started out because my dad is an educationist. While my parents where patterning my life to be an engineer, they also allowed me to be experimental” he explains.
Commenting on the reason he wears the cap, he has this to say: “As I grew up I discovered that we needed to create a brand. I just started thinking and then I remembered that even Nigerian youths don’t like to wear caps, even when they wear their natives.
I traced it back to the Yoruba race .Whenever you see someone wearing a cap, it means they are going to a party. I am the life of the party.”
